Which Type of Therapy Group is for me?

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

There are a few categories of groups supporting mental health, but do you know how they are different? It's important for you to educate yourself before start group therapy, so that you can choose the type of therapy that will meet your needs and help you reach your goals most quickly and efficiently. The main types are Support Groups, Process Therapy Groups, and Skills Therapy Groups. Here's how they differ.

Goals:

  • Support Groups: Coping is the primary goal, providing support to help you cope with a specific situation or challenge. This type of group is typically organized around a common problem.

  • Process Therapy Groups: Change is the primary goal, but the method of the group can also provide empathy, understanding and support as well. This type of group can help you change your interpersonal style, and approach to relationships.

  • Skills Therapy Groups: Skills development, skills learning, and implementation to achieve change is the main goal. This type of group can help you find new ways to deal with specific issues, such as anger, anxiety, or depression.

Leader:

  • Support Groups: Can be led by a therapist, or a peer, trying to get members to be helpful and support each other.

  • Process Therapy Groups: led by a therapist, making therapy interventions.

  • Skills Therapy Groups: led by a therapist, teaching skills in a structured, classroom type learning setting.
